Seasonal service — summer months

RV Air Conditioner & A/C Repair

Central Oregon summers run hot and dry, and a rooftop A/C that quits during a trip can make an RV difficult to use in a hurry.

RV air conditioners tend to fail in a handful of common ways: a weak or failed start capacitor that can no longer start the compressor, fan motor issues, control or thermostat faults, restricted airflow from dirty filters and coils, and low-voltage supply that can make a healthy unit behave like a broken one.

Diagnosis generally works through supply voltage, the capacitor, fan operation and control signal — enough to help separate a repairable unit from one that likely needs replacing, with an honest explanation either way.

Air conditioning is the one Fixin Trips service treated as seasonal. Having a weak unit looked at earlier in the warm season is generally easier than waiting until the first heat wave.

Questions

Air Conditioner Repair FAQs

Why is my RV air conditioner blowing warm air?

A common cause is a weak or failed start capacitor that can't start the compressor. Restricted airflow from dirty filters and coils, a failing fan motor and low supply voltage can produce a similar symptom, which is why the unit is generally tested rather than guessed at.

Can you recharge my RV A/C with refrigerant?

No. RV rooftop air conditioners are sealed systems that aren't field-recharged. If the sealed system has failed, replacement is generally the answer, and you'll be told that plainly.

Is A/C repair available year-round?

RV air conditioning is treated as a seasonal service through the warm months. Fixin Trips is open year-round, and earlier in the season is generally a good time to have marginal cooling looked at.

Why does my A/C trip the breaker?

Possible causes include a hard-starting compressor, a failed capacitor, or a supply problem. Both the unit and the power feeding it are generally checked, since low voltage at a park pedestal can trip a healthy air conditioner.
