RV Electrical & 12-Volt System Repair

No power. No lights. Nothing works. Electrical faults are among the most-misdiagnosed problems in an RV, and they're worth tracing properly instead of replacing parts hopefully.

An RV runs two electrical systems at once: 12-volt DC that powers lights, pumps, fans, furnace controls and refrigerator boards, and 120-volt AC that arrives from shore power or an inverter. The converter sits between them, charging the batteries and feeding the DC side. When something anywhere in that layout fails, the symptom can show up somewhere unrelated — a furnace that won't ignite or a fridge that won't start can both be low-voltage problems rather than appliance problems.

Diagnosis generally relies on measurement rather than guesswork: voltage at the battery, voltage at the panel, converter output, ground integrity, and fuse and breaker condition. That's how a dead circuit gets traced to a likely cause — such as a corroded ground or a failed converter — instead of an expensive appliance replacement that may not fix anything.

This category covers 12-volt and converter troubleshooting, battery diagnosis, fuse and breaker panel issues, no-power and no-lights calls, and the low-voltage conditions that can affect other RV systems.

Symptoms

Signs it's time to call

If any of these sound familiar, describe them on the phone — the details usually narrow the cause before the visit.

  • No 12-volt power at all — no lights, no pump, no furnace controls
  • Lights dim or flicker, or dim further when the pump or fan runs
  • Batteries won't hold a charge or drain overnight
  • Fuses blow repeatedly on the same circuit
  • Shore power connects but nothing inside comes on
  • Appliances behave erratically for no obvious reason
  • Converter is hot, noisy or clearly not charging

Questions

Electrical & 12-Volt FAQs

My RV has no power at all. Where does that usually start?

Often at the battery, the main fuse or disconnect, or the converter. A total loss of 12-volt power is commonly upstream of the appliances, which is why checking the source first can save money.

Do you install or repair solar systems?

No. Solar panels, controllers and off-grid solar setups are outside what Fixin Trips services. Battery and 12-volt diagnosis is in scope.

Can an electrical problem stop my furnace or refrigerator from working?

Yes, in some cases. Both rely on stable 12-volt power for their control boards. Low or unstable voltage can produce symptoms that look like appliance failure, which is why voltage is generally checked before parts are considered.

Do you diagnose and replace RV batteries?

Yes — batteries are checked and replaced as part of electrical diagnosis when that's the source of the problem.
