RV Water Heater Repair

No hot water can end a trip early, and it's often a repairable control or ignition issue rather than a failed tank.

RV water heaters run on propane, on a 120-volt electric element, or on both. Each path can fail differently: the propane side depends on an igniter, a gas valve, a thermostat and a limit switch that can lock the unit out when something is wrong; the electric side depends on an element and thermostat that can fail quietly. Figuring out which side is out — and whether the unit is locked out or genuinely failed — is a large part of the diagnosis.

This category covers propane ignition diagnosis, gas valve and thermostat issues, electric element diagnosis, and the low-voltage problems that can stop a propane unit from attempting ignition.

Water heaters are also a common place for freeze damage to show up. A unit that wasn't drained and bypassed before winter can be damaged, and spring de-winterization is often when that's discovered — which is exactly why it's better found in a driveway than at a campground.

Questions

Water Heater Repair FAQs

Why does my RV water heater have no hot water on propane but work on electric?

That points toward the propane side specifically — the igniter, gas valve, thermostat, lockout switch, propane supply, or the 12-volt power the ignition circuit depends on.

What does it mean when the reset keeps tripping?

The limit switch is protecting the unit from overheating. It can indicate a thermostat, control or other underlying issue worth diagnosing rather than repeatedly resetting.

Can a frozen water heater be repaired?

Sometimes the associated lines and fittings can be repaired; a damaged tank generally cannot. This is why draining and bypassing the water heater is an important part of proper winterization.

Do you process warranty claims for water heaters?

No. Fixin Trips doesn't process warranty claims directly. Customers may pay for eligible service and seek reimbursement from their warranty provider themselves.
